What's 'Personal' Photography?

| edward@edwardmoffat.com Personal Photography Your Safety Personal Photography for me is being able to show something a bit more about the person - it often requires knowing the person a bit better; Taking the time to do that properly. What are YOU trying to say, and what was the motivation in the first place to seek out an artist? Some potential rationale: 1) Getting a real portrait - is something you can't do in three minutes, in my opinion. Some mottled coloured background and a preset lighting scheme allows for little creativity or spontaneity. You will not see a single image with a fake background here, and usually there is no background at all; just simple black. Why? We are here to create incredible, lasting and purposeful images of you. You are the focus, and you hold the reason we will work together. I am not a fan of distraction, and certainly not distraction from the subject of one of my images. 2) Creating a message for my boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/lover...in this image. Is this a serious image? Maybe a 'thank you', maybe something naughty, a 'don't forget me while you are away' image, but there is 'intent' in creating that image - you aren't simply sitting with a smile on your face. 3) Boudoir - somewhat more provocative than 1) and 2) above, a purposeful intent to illicit a response - but then this would be an image not shared with the public... sometimes called "Gift" photography 4) Art Images - I have had clients ask to create art with them where they are part of the canvas by themselves, or sometimes with a prop. This collaboration takes time, but is always extremely rewarding. 5) Location Images - as you can see from the 'On Location' Gallery my gear is all mobile and I have captured images across the country. While some of those look like they were taken in a studio - none of them were. "Red Chair Possibilities' (the first image you saw on my site), for example, was taken in Calgary in a rather small condo living room. 6) Point In Time images - this is you - right now. How you feel, what you are about, how you look. You may even look better in the future, but you will never look like this again. Sometimes that capture is the most important of them all. ------------------------------------- About SAFETY Saftey means a couple different things: 1) Your personal comfort is paramount during our time working together and there is always space for you to bring an 'escort' with you who can be with us, or in another room while we are working. It can be a good idea to do this because if you are nervous or tense - I guarantee it will show in your images so feel free to bring someone with you if that would help you feel more secure. 2) Safety of the imagery from getting out of my control After we have created some images together your images: - Are Backed Up to computer gear with Military grade encryption These devices are never connected to a computer that is also connected to the internet at the same time. - Are NEVER sent to a lab for processing or printing without your express permission. - Are printed HERE, onsite, where I can maintain quality control and access control to the images. While I can provide proofing of images from a password protected website, I would only do that with your approval. We can always do it in person, too, or I can courier proofs. ------------------------------ Regardless of why you want the images, or how we create them together, or where we work, if I can understand your motivation I can help you capture the feeling.
